Här görs en åtskillnad mellan effekt och konstruktionsprestanda, varvid konstruktionsprestandan alltid är lägre än effekten. Ju mindre skillnaden är mellan ingångs- och utgångsspänning, desto mindre blir konstruktionsarbetet.
Typeffekt = 1 – (underspänning/överspänning) * märkeffekt
