Autotransformatorer används när galvanisk isolering från matningsnätet (dvs. mellan ingångs- och utgångslindningen) kan undvikas. I detta fall är ingångs- och utgångslindningarna elektriskt anslutna. Här skiljer man mellan genomströmningskraft och konstruktionskraft, varvid konstruktionskraften alltid är lägre än genomströmningskraften. Ju mindre skillnaden är mellan in- och utspänningen, desto lägre är den nominella effekten.
Motsvarande standard för autotransformatorer är EN 61558-2-13.
