Den isolerande transformatorn är en transformator med skyddande separation mellan ingångs- och utgångslindningar. Isoleringstransformatorer används för elektrisk isolering av kretsar för att begränsa faror som uppstår vid oavsiktlig samtidig kontakt mellan jord och spänningsförande delar eller metalldelar som kan vara spänningsförande i händelse av ett isoleringsfel. Skyddsåtgärderna kan uppfyllas med isolerande transformatorer ”Protective separation”.
