GLOSSARY

Switchgear

Switchgear is electrical equipment for controlling, distributing and protecting energy in power grids. They consist of various components such as switches, circuit-breakers, disconnectors, fuses, busbars, transformers and measuring and protection devices.

Their main task is to safely switch electrical energy, connect or disconnect circuits and protect systems from overloads or short circuits. Transformers often adapt the voltage between different grid levels. Switchgear is used at different voltage levels, from low-voltage systems in buildings to high-voltage and extra-high-voltage systems in substations.

Depending on the design, a distinction is made between open (air-insulated) and encapsulated (gas- or solid-insulated) switchgear. They are a central component of the energy supply and make a significant contribution to operational safety and grid stability.
