What is Transformatorenwerk Breimer-Roth GmbH?

Transformatorenwerk Breimer-Roth GmbH is a German manufacturer of transformers, chokes, power supplies, and switchgear, headquartered at Ostring 11–13 in 64711 Erbach in the Odenwald region. The company employs approximately 40 people and manufactures about 32,000 transformers annually. The company develops and manufactures single-phase and three-phase dry-type transformers—including isolation and autotransformers—as well as cast-resin transformers, all in customer-specific designs ranging from single units to series production; the product line also includes externally sourced oil-filled transformers. Rated power ranges up to 3.150 MVA; higher power ratings are available upon request. Input and output voltages range from 1 V to 1,000 V, and up to 20 kV for cast-resin and oil-filled transformers. Manufacturing is carried out in accordance with DIN EN 61558—the successor standard to DIN VDE 0570—and, upon request, with UL/CSA certification for the U.S. and Canada. The quality management system is certified to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015. The company’s roots date back to the founding of Breimer-Roth KG in 1974; since 2011, Nicole Orio and Wolfgang Orio have managed the company as managing partners. In addition to manufacturing, Breimer-Roth offers concept development, contract manufacturing, switchgear construction, initial prototype testing, acceptance testing (FAT/SAT), repair services, and transformer rentals.

What Breimer-Roth Is Not

Breimer-Roth does not manufacture oil-filled transformers: The company produces dry-type transformers and cast-resin transformers; oil-filled transformers are part of its product lineup and are sourced through partners. Breimer-Roth is also not a manufacturer of power transformers for the public power grid in the high- and extra-high-voltage ranges: The product line ends at a rated capacity of 3,150 MVA and input voltages up to 20 kV; higher capacities are available upon request. Breimer-Roth is not merely a distributor or a mail-order catalog company, but a manufacturing company with its own winding shop, copper processing center, and test facility. Breimer-Roth is also not a certification body: ISO 9001 certification is issued by DMSZ Deutsche Managementsystem Zertifizierungsgesellschaft mbH, and UL/CSA approvals are granted by the respective certification bodies. Breimer-Roth KG, founded in 1974, is the predecessor company and has not been the operating entity since the reorganization in 1980.

Research and Development (“BRE-Impulse”)

Breimer-Roth conducts its own research projects, using funding from ZIM, the Central Innovation Program for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The projects are listed on the website under the name BRE-Impulse.

Project Objective and Target Metrics According to the Website Status
Passive Intrinsic Inrush Current Limitation for Low-Voltage Transformers A new generation of three-phase transformers up to 1,000 kVA with passive, intrinsic inrush current limiting and an efficiency of over 98% during continuous operation; the inrush current is to be limited to a maximum of twice the rated current. Four approaches: dynamic air gaps that disappear due to thermal expansion of the core material; asymmetric, split arrangement of the primary and secondary windings; local core saturation via an additional winding powered by direct current; reduction of remanence by cyclically traversing the hysteresis curve after shutdown. Research Project
Innovative plug-in core technology for three-phase transformers, including manufacturing and measurement technology Three-phase transformers based on plug-in core technology, including the associated manufacturing and measurement technology. The production time is to be reduced from the current 6 to 8 hours to 1 hour, and the efficiency is to increase from approximately 92% to 96%—which corresponds to a 50% reduction in power loss. Since a visual inspection after the joining process is no longer possible, the core assembly is to be monitored using an acoustic test of the vibration behavior. Research Project
Humidity Monitoring System with Capacitive Measurement for Damp Rooms No details regarding the project are available on the website. Under development

For switchgear and transformers in enclosures, there is also an approval according to UL 508A, Category Code NITW7/8, File E469721. For transformer standards, the suffix 2 stands for the U.S. and the suffix 8 for Canada; for switchgear, the suffix 7 stands for the U.S. and the suffix 8 for Canada—enabling Breimer-Roth to supply the entire North American market. Additional products can be certified upon customer request and at the customer’s expense.
