Our UL approvals

To use transformers or other electrical components in the USA and Canada, it is generally necessary to obtain certification according to UL/CSA standards.

Since there are a variety of different UL/CSA certifications, it is important to pay attention to the specific standard and category code under which the product is certified. Often, people simply look for the relevant logo on the product and consider it suitable. However, this can lead to significant issues during commissioning in the USA and Canada.

The following explains our possible certifications for transformers and industrial control panels:

Construction only
Category Code XORU2/XORU8

This is the most cost-effective certification. There is no separate standard for this. During testing, only a few samples from the desired series are checked to ensure that the air and creepage distances are maintained. No further electrical tests are conducted. If a transformer with this certification is used, additional testing according to UL requirements is mandatory.

Electrical insulation system
Standard: UL1446
Category Code OBJY2/OBJY8

This approval is required as the basis for a full authorization. Here all materials installed in the transformers are checked for chemical compatibility under the influence of temperature in a long-term test. As a result, you get an approval for a corresponding insulation system in relation to a temperature class.

File No: E475312
Insulation System Name: BRE-155
Temperature Class: 155°C/F

Full approval
Standard: UL5085
Category Code XPTQ2/XPTQ8

With this certification, all desired transformers are tested for their electrical values, heating, and the materials used. Transformers that hold this certification can be installed in switchgear or other systems without further concerns. No additional testing by UL is required.

File No: E483928
Current series: BE, BEV, BS, BSV (other series are in preparation)

Approval for Ind. Control Panels
Standard: UL508A
Category Code NITW7/NITW8

This certification applies to enclosures and switchgear for the U.S. and Canadian markets. All materials used must be properly certified. Additionally, UL-listed wires must be used, required air and creepage distances must be adhered to, and various labeling requirements must be met. If the switchgear meets all the requirements, it is labeled with a certification sticker and serial number.
