Our UL approvals

In order to be able to use transformers or other electrical components in the USA and Canada, a corresponding UL/CSA approval is generally required.

As there are many different UL/CSA approvals, it is important to check which standard and which category code the product in question is approved to. Often people simply look for a corresponding logo on the product and find that it is suitable. This can lead to considerable problems during commissioning in the USA and Canada.

Our possible approvals for transformers and switch cabinets are explained below:

Construction only
Category code XORU2/XORU8

This is the most cost-effective approval. There is no separate standard for this. During the test, only a few samples from the desired series are tested to see whether the clearance and creepage distances are complied with. No further electrical tests are carried out. If a transformer with this approval is used, further tests are mandatory according to UL.

Electrical insulation system
Standard: UL1446/Category Code OBJY2/OBJY8

This approval is required as the basis for full approval. Here, all materials used in the transformers are tested for chemical compatibility under the influence of temperature in a long-term test. The result is an approval for a corresponding insulation system in relation to a temperature class.

Breimer-Roth approval data:
File No: E475312
Name of the insulation system: BRE-155
Temperature class: 155°C/F

Full approval
Standard: UL5085/Category Code XPTQ2/XPTQ8

With this approval, all desired transformers are tested for their electrical values, heating and the material used. Transformers with this approval can be installed in switch cabinets or other systems without any further concerns. No additional tests are required by UL.

Breimer Roth approval data:
File No: E483928
Current series: BE, BEV, BS, BSV. (further series in preparation)

Approval for switchgear
Standard: UL508A/Category Code NITW7/NITW8

This approval relates to enclosures and control cabinets for the US and Canadian markets. All materials used must be approved accordingly. In addition, the use of UL stranded wires, compliance with the required clearance and creepage distances and various labeling specifications are also required. If the enclosure meets all requirements, it is provided with an approval sticker and serial number.
