Application of chokes

Chokes are inductive components in the field of electrical engineering. They are mainly used in the field of power supply of electrical devices or systems, in power electronics as well as in low and high frequency technology. Line chokes consist of at least one winding of a current conductor through which the full load current flows. The winding is usually wound on a coil carrier and consists of a soft magnetic core. Chokes work with the so-called self-induction and can therefore be used in various areas of electrical engineering. Chokes can thus be used for suppression, radio interference suppression, commutation, current limiting, suppression of unwanted frequencies or for energy storage in switching regulators and switching power supplies.

The Special Line Choke is connected between the supply network and the frequency converter to smooth current peaks (current-compensated choke) caused by the current consumption of the converter. As a result, the waveform of the mains current becomes closer to the sinusoidal curve again and there are fewer mains disturbances. In addition, mains interference in the direction of the frequency inverter is attenuated. Line Chokes can be manufactured as Single-Phase and Three-Phase Line Chokes. In contrast to transformers, which convert voltages, the line choke is an inductive resistor, which dampens voltages.

A Line Choke reduces voltage dips in the line voltage caused by the commutation process and prevents undue stress on semiconductors caused by excessive current rise. The current ripple is also smoothed.

Mains Chokes are used for the single-phase as well as for the three-phase mains. For regenerative converters, line chokes are used as EMC filters. In this case, the use of the choke decouples the mains from the frequency inverter and reduces the THD value (Total Harmonic Distortion).
